Boy charged as adult on 4 counts of murder

He barely looks 12, let alone 15. He has an altar boy's face, a Boy Scout's haircut and melancholy eyes that scanned a crowded courtroom Friday with a seeming mixture of curiosity and confusion.

Then he stood, dwarfed by his two attorneys on either side, and grasped a piece of paper charging him as an adult with four counts of aggravated murder.

Kipland Phillip Kinkel, clad in gray sneakers, black jeans and a University of Oregon Ducks sweatshirt, answered "yes" twice in a soft voice when Lane County Circuit Judge Jack Mattison asked if Kinkel's name was spelled right and whether his date of birth - Aug. 30, 1982 - was correct.

In less than a minute, in front of dozens of reporters from across the nation, he was handcuffed and led away by two sheriff's deputies, each grasping one of the boy's skinny arms.

It was one more surreal moment in the aftermath of the shooting rampage that began Wednesday afternoon at Kinkel's upscale home east of Springfield and ended Thursday morning at Thurston High School.

By Friday, the tragedy had claimed four lives - Kinkel's parents and two teen-age classmates - and led to what police said were "extraordinary" discoveries of homemade bombs and bomb-making materials in and under Kinkel's house.

The latest victim to die was Ben Walker, 16, who was shot in the head outside Thurston's cafeteria as Kinkel allegedly opened fire with a Ruger .22-caliber rifle.

One student, 17-year-old Mikael Nickolauson, was shot to death inside the cafeteria. Another 19 youths, including Walker, were shot. Nine remained hospitalized Friday, two in critical condition.

Police said Kinkel emptied a 50-round clip of rifle ammunition, then fired a single shot from a 9 mm Glock handgun when he was tackled by five students. The Glock was one of two semiautomatic handguns allegedly tucked in Kinkel's waistband beneath a trench coat.

The rifle, a hunting weapon, was Kinkel's, and the handguns belonged to his father, police said.

Walker, a sophomore, had been on life support since being admitted to McKenzie-Willamette Hospital on Thursday morning, hospital spokesman Roy Orr said at a 9 a.m. news conference at Springfield City Hall.

Walker's family, told there was no chance of recovery, agreed Thursday afternoon to make the boy's organs available for donation, a surgical process that was under way Friday morning, Orr said.

Kinkel's parents, both popular language teachers, were found shot to death inside their A-frame home at 88082 Chita Loop just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Unofficial sources say Bill Kinkel, 59, was killed Wednesday afternoon after he brought his son home from school when the boy was arrested and suspended for possessing a handgun that another boy stole in a burglary.

Faith Kinkel, 57, reportedly was killed after arriving home several hours later. Authorities released no information about the number of shots, the wounds or where the bodies were found inside the house.

Sheriff's officials didn't formally identify the couple until Friday, when deputies and forensic specialists were cleared to search the house after explosives experts thought they'd finished combing it for booby traps.

The search for explosives began Thursday morning, shortly after deputies found the bodies. In the course of interviews with shooting witnesses and people acquainted with Kinkel, police learned of his alleged fascination with bombs.

Sheriff Jan Clements said they had no specific reason to believe the house was rigged with explosives but feared it was possible. As a precaution, they evacuated 15 houses in the Kinkels' neighborhood.

They found the first of three homemade devices Thursday in a crawl space under the house, where they found a second, larger device Friday morning.

They also found two small, crude pipe bombs beneath the house, as well as fireworks and chemicals used to make bombs.

In Kinkel's bedroom, Clements said, they found a hand grenade and two Howitzer shells, and, inside a drawer, found four "small disruptive devices." He said the boy also had articles about constructing bombs, including printouts from the Internet.

Authorities hadn't determined whether the grenade or the cannon shells - described as 5 to 6 inches in diameter and approximately 18 inches high - are active. Inert shells can be purchased at Army surplus stores.

Clements said the bomb specialists, from Eugene police and state police, characterized the apparent homemade bombs as "somewhat sophisticated," but said none appeared to be set to explode.

The smaller of the two devices discovered initially contained a pound of explosive filler, a timing mechanism with a battery attached and electrical circuitry, sheriff's spokesman Ernie Loy said.

The larger device was described as a fire extinguisher filled with an explosive material, attached to a digital timer.

The bomb team had to cut away a small portion of an exterior wall to safely remove the larger device, Clements said. It was placed in a "bomb basket" to be carried to an area landfill where police routinely detonate potentially explosive materials.

Clements said the device appeared large enough to cause "collateral damage to the neighborhood," had it exploded.

The smaller bomb was rendered safe at the scene, using what Loy called a "disrupter." "It's a very, very small electrical charge that rips it apart before it explodes," he said.

The extensive bomb sweep appeared to be finished by midday Friday, and neighbors were allowed to return to their homes. But shortly after 3 p.m., when only one of the two bodies had been removed from the house, authorities discovered a third device.

No details were available Friday about the device, but the bomb team returned to the scene to comb the house again, authorities said. There was no further evacuation.

Besides explosives, some of Kinkel's friends said, he was obsessed with guns and talked, often in a wise-cracking manner, about death, torture and killing.

Springfield School Superintendent Jamon Kent said Friday that none of the students who heard such statements ever brought them to the attention of teachers or administrators.

Adults had varying experiences with Kinkel, from those who called him "rude" and "destructive" to a neighbor woman who saw him as a "sweet, shy, lonely" boy who sometimes stopped to chat.

His quiet demeanor in court, however, was in sharp contrast to his reported behavior with Springfield police early Thursday.

Capt. Jerry Smith said Kinkel was in an interview room alone for a few minutes after arriving at police headquarters, where he stayed for eight hours before being lodged in the Skipworth Juvenile Detention Center.

Kinkel managed to slip his hands, still in handcuffs, from his back to his front. When a detective opened the door, Smith said, Kinkel lunged at him with a small knife that, unknown to police, he'd had taped to an ankle.

Detectives quickly subdued him with pepper spray, and Smith said Kinkel "immediately threw the knife down on the table."

Kinkel's court appearance at 3:30 p.m. Friday brought reporters to the courthouse hours in advance to ensure a seat. It is expected to be his only court date pending a grand jury indictment next month.

Close to 150 people, journalists as well as Thurston students and families and friends of victims, waited to watch Friday's arraignment, which lasted barely a minute. The father of a wounded student was nearly edged out by the crowd. Then a deputy emerged and said there was room for one more.

"Let me in. I'm the father of one of the victims," said John Walley, 56, who got a second-row seat.

Walley said he needed to see the boy who shot his son Jesse. What he saw was a boy "with nothing unusual about him."

"That's the scary thing - he just looked like a kid," Walley said. "There's no sense to this. And there's not going to be."
